Walk-In Chiller and Freezer Combo for Restaurants and Hotels

Reference design for a restaurant or hotel kitchen: a two-compartment walk-in with +2 °C chiller and −18 °C freezer, quiet box-type units and hygienic finish.

Stainless walk-in chiller and freezer in a commercial kitchen

The challenge

Restaurant and hotel kitchens need chilled and frozen storage close to the cooking line, in limited space that is often hot. Doors open many times a day, staff move quickly, and food safety inspections require clean surfaces and reliable temperature records.

Noise matters too: condensing units may be installed in a service yard near guest areas or on a roof above dining spaces.

The engineered solution

Nested two-compartment layout

The freezer is entered through the chiller. The chiller acts as an anteroom, reducing warm air entering the freezer and the frost load on its evaporator.

Quiet, independent refrigeration

  • Two box-type condensing units with enclosed cabinets for lower noise and outdoor installation.
  • Separate circuits so a fault in one compartment does not affect the other.

Hygiene and usability

  • Food-grade inner skins, coved corners and easy-clean shelving.
  • Strip curtains on both doors and door-open alarms.
  • Heated freezer door frame and pressure relief valve for easy door opening.

Design targets

The combo is designed to hold +2 °C in the chiller and −18 °C in the freezer under frequent door openings in a kitchen environment of up to about 35 °C, with the chiller buffering the freezer against infiltration.

Assembly is planned for one to two days by a small crew using installation drawings and video guidance, with the room sized to the kitchen's daily deliveries in the project-specific design.

Equipment list

  • 100 mm PU camlock panels with food-grade inner skin; freezer compartment floor insulated
  • Two box-type hermetic condensing units, one per compartment
  • DL-type evaporator in the chiller, DD-type with electric defrost in the freezer
  • Hinged doors with heated frame on the freezer door and pressure relief valve
  • Stainless steel or aluminum shelving and LED lighting
  • Digital controllers with temperature display and door alarm
