40ft Container Mobile Cold Room for Remote Sites

Reference design for a 40ft container cold room for mining, construction and relief sites: plug-in chiller or freezer, generator-ready and easy to relocate.

The challenge

Mining camps, construction projects and relief operations need reliable cold storage for food or supplies, often far from any suitable building and with no time to build one. Power typically comes from generators, ambient temperatures can be extreme, and dust is constant.

Sites also move. Equipment that must be dismantled and rebuilt each time adds cost and downtime, and local technicians may have limited access to specialized parts.

The engineered solution

Self-contained, relocatable unit

The blueprint is a purpose-built 40ft container cold room with refrigeration mounted on the container end frame. It is factory-piped, charged and tested, so on site it only needs a level base and a power connection.

Built for harsh conditions

  • Condensing unit and fan motors selected for ambient temperatures up to 46 °C.
  • Condenser positioned for easy coil cleaning in dusty environments.
  • Steel shell with lockable door for secure storage.

Generator-ready electrics

  • Phase-failure, under- and over-voltage protection.
  • Starting current data supplied so the generator can be sized correctly; soft starter available as an option.

Serviceable components

Standard cold room components are used throughout, rather than proprietary transport-reefer machinery, so local refrigeration technicians can maintain the unit.

Design targets

The chiller version is designed to hold +2 °C and the freezer version −18 °C at ambient temperatures up to 46 °C, with pull-down from ambient to set point targeted within about 4–8 hours empty, depending on version and conditions.

The unit is intended to be operational within a day of arrival on site, given a prepared base and suitable power, and to be relocated by crane and truck without dismantling.

Equipment list

  • 40ft high-cube steel container shell with PU-insulated walls, roof and floor
  • 100 mm insulation for chiller version, 120 mm for freezer version
  • Box-type condensing unit mounted on the container end frame
  • DL- or DD-type evaporator with electric defrost on freezer models
  • Anti-slip floor, LED lighting, insulated personnel door with inside release
  • Controller with temperature alarm, phase protection and optional remote monitoring

This is a reference blueprint. Final capacities and layouts are calculated for each site.
